Word of the Day: Psalm 66:13-14

Word of the Day

Psalm 66:13-14

I shall come into Your house with burnt offerings; I shall pay You my vows, and my mouth spoke when I was in distress.

Foxhole Faith

During World War 2 I often heard ... there are no atheists in foxholes. Some of the men I knew who promised God to serve Him if He would spare their lives ... did just that. But most didn't. Seems that as soon as the "distress" passed, so did their promise. The Psalmist put it well, "my mouth spoke". It certainly didn't come from the heart.

Verse 12 expands the thought, "You made men ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water, yet You brought us out into a place of abundance." God keeps His promises and we are to keep ours.

Moses warned the people shortly before they entered the Promised Land. He told them that their arrival in the "place of great abundance" was "the time to be careful. Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the Lord your God and disobey His commands, regulations and laws" (Deuteronomy 8:11)

The Psalm writer was able to testify that he had fulfilled his vows (verses 13-14).His appreciation was shown to be real through his desire to share his experience of God's goodness, with others – "Come and hear, all who fear God, and I will tell of what He has done for my soul' (verse 16).

What better response can I have to my Lord's love than to share His unfailing love with others who are still crouched in their foxholes.
