Word of the Day: Job 38

Word of the Day

Reading: Job 38

'Hey Mister Know-it-All!'

"Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Job 38:2

The best way to acquire and maintain humility is residing in the presence of God. It is His doing and delight to keep us humble, not ours, because we are not very good at it. The Puritans knew how to practice the presence of God in prayer. Consider the following excerpt of a Puritan's prayer;

"When thou wouldst guide me I control myself,
When thou wouldst be sovereign I rule myself.
When thou wouldst take care of me I suffice myself.
When I should depend on thy providings I supply myself,
When I should submit to thy providence I follow my will,
When I should study, love, honor, trust thee, I serve myself;
I fault and correct thy laws to suit myself,"

Lord when I pray I have the tendency to instruct You.
Please forgive me for thinking more highly of myself
than I ought. I, like Job, do not know where I was
when You laid the foundation of the earth.
