Word of the Day

Reading: 1 Samuel 8

'Let's be Like Everyone Else'

"Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah; and they said to him, "Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint a king for us to judge us like all the nations." But the thing was displeasing in the sight of Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to judge us." And Samuel prayed to the LORD. (Samuel 8:4-7)

You have heard it said that, 'the grass always looks greener on the other side'. That's what was happening to Israel. They were looking on the other side. You see, they wanted to be like all other nations and have for themselves an earthly king. Look at the reasoning behind this, speaking of Samuel, "You have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways". The problem was not with Samuel or his sons, the problem was their evil desires. They rejected God as their King. They wanted to be like everyone else. Because of their idolatry and disobedience they wanted to serve a man instead of the King of Glory. This would be the end of Israel's theocracy and the beginning of monarchy.

My father in heaven, I want to serve only one King.
The King of King and Lord of Lords,
JESUS
