Devoted to God's Word

Word of the Day

Thirteen years ago I had a hunting accident that caused me to be unable to umpire baseball games, something that I had done for several years during basketball off-season. Due to a new teaching assignment and some renewed strength found through a physical therapist, I started calling baseball games again. I soon saw a problem developing. Due to my pride and arrogance , I found myself studying a rules book and umpiring manual more than God's Word. Heaven forbid that I would make a call in a middle school or high school baseball game and not be "prepared to make a defense" of my call.

I realized that it was becoming more important for me to know a "rule book" that to know "The Book"

"but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame."
(1 Peter 3:15-16 ESV)

"But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."
(2 Timothy 3:14-17 ESV)

After doing some studying, I realized that the "men of God" mentioned in the Bible were men who were devoted to God's Word. (Wiersbe).

2 Timothy 4:2 reminds us to ''be ready in season and out of season" Spend a lot more time studying "the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God" Ephesians 6:17 than worldly pursuits.
