David, Friend of Sinners

Walk with Jesus

I'm sure there are quite a few reasons why David was called "a man after God's own heart" but I came across a verse recently that really struck me. It wasn't just God who recognized his heart. 1 Samuel 22:2 says "And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul, gathered to him. And he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men." Reading that makes me think of Jesus. He was called a "friend of sinners" because a lot of the outcasts of the world and the really "bad" people were attracted to him. Jesus had a heart for people because his heart was completely submissive to His father. People in need of help could sense that He would accept them, comfort them, and help them. It seems David had this same sort of heart for people. A lot of the people who were probably outcasts at that time came to him and he accepted them and led them. He had a heart after God which necessarily meant he had a heart for people, all people.
